#562 Boot failures should be safer

People are sometimes seeing seeing NPE and it turns out that it is due to exceptions throws in boot. Still we should fail more gracefully. It'll probably not make it in 2.0, but I'm a little behind with release stuff. AFAIK master is frozen, isn't it ?

People are sometimes seeing seeing NPE and it turns out that it is due to exceptions throws in boot. Still we should fail more gracefully. It'll probably not make it in 2.0, but I'm a little behind with release stuff. AFAIK master is frozen, isn't it ?
The master is frozen but David indicated this to be a show stopper. I can spin an RC3 once you push this to master. What say, David?
